🟡 The Spell: 6 ways to manage change

Dear Reader,

On the kitchen table was a delicious spread. Hummus, sliced peppers, olives, flat bread and sticky squares of baclava. And it was all laid out beautifully. My neighbour was having a few people over which was lovely in itself. More amazing was that this was happening two days before she and her husband moved house and this little get together was a way of saying goodbye.

Was I impressed? Yes! It was a thoughtful thing to do, and it highlighted not just their organisational skills but their calmness.

I’ve moved house a lot and right before this my head is not in the right place to be a gracious host for a dozen people never mind organise a buffet that looks like it’s set up for the cover shoot of a magazine.

The get together was fun and it reminded me that I’ll miss them. It also made me think about that small word with the big impact: change.

Change can be something we choose, or it can be something that happens to us. It can be something we meticulously plan, or it can be something that we quickly decide.

And the biggest irony is that the one constant in life is change.

How are you with change?

Are you someone who takes things in their stride and just gets on with it, or does change unsettle you? And what do you do to manage change? How do you support yourself?

Breath and step back to get perspective

Here are six tips to managing change:

1) Focus on shifting your mood and energy to get you out of negative thinking. This might mean stopping for a cup of tea for 10 minutes, or calling a friend who makes you laugh, or going for a walk.

2) Reframe and zoom out from right now to help yourself gain perspective. How will things be in 6 months and a year from now?

3) If the change is feeling challenging what can you do to make that easier on yourself? Say you’re feeling 4 out of 10 right now. What can you do to improve that to a 6 out of 10?

4) Focus on what is staying the same. Often when change comes along it can be tempting to think everything is being uprooted. But it isn’t. Identify 5 things that are not changing. Finding these anchors gives you stability and reduces feelings of everything being disrupted.

5) If the change is feeling overwhelming, try my exercise that I shared a couple of weeks back in “The Spell” on 5th June called “Confidence Lift Off.” This exercise reminds you that you’ve managed change successfully in the past and can do this again.

And what’s the 6th thing you can do to support yourself with a change? That’s work with me.

Change is a common topic that I support my clients with. For example, stepping up into a new role, joining a new team or getting a new boss all bring challenges. Taking on a different workload, leading a project for the first time or moving from working on a local to a global role all bring change. And with change comes the need to communicate expectations, communicate with different stakeholders and manage an inner critic that might be dishing out the judgement.

And that’s where the magic of a Power Hour comes in.

It gives you the space to reflect, recharge and refocus. With me in your corner to support you. And it fits into even the busiest of schedules because it’s just one hour.

But it’s one hour where it’s all about what you need to support yourself and boost your confidence and communication so that you can manage that change more easily and with more impact.

Because change doesn’t need to be bumpy.

If that sounds like something that could make your life easier, you can book a Power Hour with me here.

See you next time,

Mica
